Blower Fan "Review"

2011 HHR LT

The heater (and A/C) blower fan suddenly stopped working today. No warning, no intermittent problems. After reading as much as I could find on this forum, it looks like the first thing I should do is: 1. Check interior fuses #10 & #16 and relay #30; 2. Check all under-hood fuses for proper fit and especially #9 & #22 (A/C related)

If that does not solve the problem, I will have to have someone else actually do the work, but I wondered if it is possible to diagnose a bit more before I open my wallet. I know that if the fan were working only on High, it would be a problem with the resistor. But, since it's not working at all, it could be just the resistor or the entire fan blower motor. I would like to save a bit of money and purchase the items before paying someone to install. Should I just go ahead and purchase both resistor and motor now? Or try just the resistor first, or what? When you replace the motor do you also need to replace resistor? Any suggestions???

Crossing fingers and hoping that it is a fuse!

Welcome to the site, without the car in front of me, I’m just guessing, it could be the HVAC controls beneath the radio, if you have a multi meter check for voltage at the terminal connector at the fan motor.

Good info, thanks. My goal here is to prevent the replacement of parts (work I can't do!) that might not be the problem. The fact that the blower gave no warning signs makes me hope that I'm not looking at bad parts so much as bad "connections". At this point I'd rather not be removing too much plastic and I don't have a multi-meter. That's the point at which I've always had someone more knowledgable start working.

I've watched a few more videos and decided to check one more fuse: #4 under-hood, Body Control Module 3. If nothing seems wrong with all fuses and relays, I think I'd rather have someone else tear the thing apart and replace blower, resistor, etc.

One concern before I start pulling fuses: can I screw things up during this process???

Only if you push the fuse or relay in crooked and bend a pin. Sometimes the relay works loose.

Note that the switch provides GROUND. The other wire to the motor is 12V.

Thanks guys! All fuses, relays checked out ok. Had mechanic check and it was definitely getting power. He got the fan started with his "special equipment" and said it was drawing a lot of amps, so likely going bad. Went ahead and had resistor & blower motor replaced. Also replaced cabin air filter which looked pretty bad. So, not cheap, but done.

No, what is awesome is having people like you guys here on a forum where little old ladies like me can come and share issues, gain knowledge and explore options. Much as I would love to repair my cars (and campervan!) there are distinct limitations to what tools I'm willing to own and work I'm willing to do. With the help of forums like this and videos on YouTube, I can make much wiser choices about needed repair work and regular maintenance. THANKS!

There should never be any limitations on the number of tools to own.
Men or women.
