bumper rattles

In recent weeks I have noticed several rattles. Have traced them down to the front and rear bumper plastic covers. They appear to have nothing much to attach to and rattle due to road conditions. Driving in high winds over the holiday on interstate highways also heard the rattles. Has anyone had the same or similar experiences? Having crawled under the front and rear to see if I might be able to do something, I found both plastic bumper covers hanging on by two plastic holders! Nothing else in the area to work with!

I think you may be the first who has had this problem. I certainly have not experienced it.

But, you do understand that your bumper isn't "hanging on" with those 2 clips. Your bumper is attached from above. The clips you mention, although they should be secure, only serve to secure the "rapping" on the bottom, of a covering over a "bumper".

Yes I do realize that the bumper itself is solid. My rattles are the plastic cover that is only clipped. I am trying to think of a way to firm up the plastic cover in order to eliminate the rattle.

Get a tube of silicon chaulk and put a dab in areas where you think is the problem. Any hardware store, Walmart, Kmart will have it.

I have the same noise on my car (rear bumper cover only) with only 3500 miles on it. I'm going to add rubber washers to both sides of the mounting brackets (when it's not snowing here in Chicagoland!) to see if that tightens the cover up a bit. I've looked down there and it looks like removing a cotter key will free up the flimsy brackets and allow the additional washers to be installed.

Question

Rubber washers will absorb the rattles and not promote any corrosion. Silicone won't help where the source of the noise is on my car, but I'm sure it help in other areas.

My 2007 HHR is six months old, I bought it new. I can make it rattle with my hand by tapping or hitting on both the front and rear bumper near each side. I thought about using the expanding foam to form a pad between the bumper and the bumper skin, but it doesn't appear to be enough good surface between the two for such a solution. I like the idea of rubber washers and may give that a try.
