Question Camshaft Position Sensor replaced, still problems!

This summer my check engine light came on my 2009 HHR and I noticed the engine hesitating when it was supposed to be idling. At red lights, it feels like my car is going to stall out.

I took it to the Autozone store to run the scanner, which told me it was the Camshaft position sensor that needed replaced. They printed out a pic of the part and the cost $55 at their store. But he told me to take it to a mechanic with a scanner for a 2nd opinion and with my print-out in-hand.

A couple months later, we took it to Monro Muffler, they ran the scanner, said it was the SAME problem as the Autozone store said, but he told me to hurry up and take it to the dealer that he wouldn't touch it.

So I called a small local mechanic the same day, told them the problem that was diagnosed by those 2 places, they replaced the camshaft position sensor. $75 for the part, $75 for labor. Much better than what my dealer would've charged me.

But the check engine light is still on, and I notice at red lights it still hesitates like its going to stall out.

Do I go back to Autozone for another scan or call the mechanic back to complain? Anyone else have similar problem with their HHR?

Welcome to the site. I think you need one more sensor, I would check for another code. Good luck......

Welcome to the site.

The code number would be very helpful! Code names rarely mean what they seem to say.

If the mechanic charged you $75 labor for unscrewing one screw and then replacing it, I want his job. The camshaft position sensor(s) are held into place with one screw each and an O-ring. For that price, I would think he would have and use his own scanner.

Most retail scan reader clerks can't tell the difference between "sensor" and "solenoid", but the car can.

shepraiser - as others have stated, you need to post the code, not the description the mechanic gave you. Yeah, go back and get it rescanned, and post the CODE here.

If it was P0010/11/ or P0013/14, then they replaced a sensor, not the solenoid which is a semi-common mistake. There is a big difference between solenoid and sensor.

Lucky posted to a link about the SOLENOIDs diagnostic and replacement - check it out - they are a snap to replace.
