The GM 6094M spec relates to low temperature pumpability.

Not an issue in July unless you're taking a road trip with the HHR to the Antarctic

6094M was resurrected because the GF-4 oils were going to be delayed.

Where all this goes is anyone's guess.

Goose.....

sounds like you're trying to justify using an oil that POSSIBLY does not qualify for use in the HHR. j/k

But, ALL I know about the GM6049M certification is that it is for oils that meet high temperatures and severe duty, AS PER GM TESTING METHODS/REQUIREMENTS.....whatever/however GM uses to determine what is suitable for their vehicles.

Also, do you also understand that at one time GTX MIGHT have met the requirement and for some reason it NOW does not. But this not meeting the requirement, could have been everything produced from the last GM approval to the most recent. Maybe the oil you have does not. GM cannot test every case of oil to determine it's properties. Of course, this could work the other way as well.

And Castrol wouldn't pull their oil from the shelves because of this. There is other vehicles that could use the GTX, legitimately.

Listen, I'm not telling you one way or another, what to do. I'm trying to provide some thoughts for you......to ease your questioning or to make a descision. You're a smart guy.....DO WHATEVER MAKES YOU COMFORTABLE (my infamous statement regarding oil).

Edit.....Black Roses post corrects my statement...I may have been thinking of the GF-4 requirments.

Snoop......this is the first time I have have used Castrol GTX in any of my vehicles...have used the blend and Syntec and trust me, I'm not trying to justify anything. Like I said, I could care less what brand of oil I have in there right now...I was questioning what this test consists of and how GM determines what is a good oil and what isn't. I really think I'll be just fine running this oil out to 3000 miles as I planned to. To tell the truth I have never even know there was a list of approved oils you could use in any car. I usually buy whatever brand name I can get for the least amount of money

I can see why some of my questions may sound like I'm wondering what to do but I'm pretty sure the HHR will keep running fine...heck it ain't cooking oil in there lol And yes I do understand that GTX was on the list at one time but as of the newest they are not....

As I said I just wanted to know what this GM6049M standard is and it looks like you and Brad have answered it for me

According to Johnny (retired Pennzoil/SOPUS employee) over on BITOG, the oil companies do the tests and submit the results to GM, along with a licensing fee to allow them (oil co.) to state that they meet 6094M on their label.

Just thought I would let those members who are interested.....

Wal-Mart today, July 13th, rolled back prices on

MOBIL 1, 5W-30.....$19.88 a 5 quart bottle.

Don't know if it will be the same in your area, but that's a reduction of about $4.00/bottle. That makes my changes and OEM filter less than $25.00

Sorry, if this makes this thread topic confusing. There is so many regarding the oil change topic. This is the first thread that came up under the search function.

That's pretty low price for Mobil-1. Do you know if it is still a group IV "true synthetic" or have they downgraded it to a Group III "synthetic"? Group IV is PAO based but Group III is still just highly refined conventional petroleum oil. Group IV true synthetics seem to be getting rarer.

Do a search for that topic on BITOG and then come back here sometime late next week when you finish reading all the posts/threads

In short, the jury is still out on it, but it appears that M1 contains some level of group III.
