I don't think you should ENTIRELY trust a Service Writer/Adviser when it comes to warranty issues. Because of this, I checked MY 2006 GM Warranty and Owner Assistance Information book that is issued with the Owners Manual.

It appears to me the converter is in the list of items covered for 8 years/80,000 miles under the Federal Mandate.....as American and Proud indicates above.

DOES YOUR CAR FIT THIS MILEAGE/YEAR REQUIREMENT. And have you altered the dp or other exhaust features??

By the way...it appears the oxygen sensors are also covered under the emission warranty.

Lola-

I agree with A&P & Snoopy, even my 1998 Chevy S-10 had the 8 years/80,000 miles under the Federal Mandate.

So your "Cat" should be covered, unless you exceed the mileage limit..

At 82,000 miles you're outside the emissions warranty by just a bit, you may still be able to get the dealer to cover at least part of the cost as a customer courtesy. I would talk to them and see if they would cover the labor and or parts seeing as how close you still are to the covered mileage.

One other thing to consider is if you started to have problems with the vehicle while still covered by the emissions warranty, it would depend on whether you had an emissions related problem that was documented by the dealer....but improperly diagnosed or repaired.

CEL for catalytic converter

On my Subaurs, the code was set for catalytic converter, but cleaning up the fuel injectors fixed the problem. Is there anything like that on the HHR? I wouldn't want to have you replace the whole catalytic converter only to discover that the problem was earlier in the fuel system.

I just got my fuel injection cleaned when I got a tune up...and come to think of it I had my o2 sensor replaced almost two years ago at a Chevy dealership, that law shouldve covered that from what I understand.

One last thing to try since you've hit a wall with your dealer. Contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020 and ask for the direct contact number for the Charlotte zone manager, his name is Todd Newsome. Explain things to Todd and see if maybe you can get a courtesy adjustment to offset at least part of the converter replacement cost, can't think of anything else, good luck.
