When I start my SS after it has been sitting for a long time it sounds like a thrashing machine. After it has warmed up and the idle goes down it is as quiet as a kitten (Don't know how quiet that is). Can you all help me.

Could be timing chain tensioner, but at that noise level it could be the timing chain guides contributing to the band!

 

Hey Gang.....I can't seem to find my last post so I will try again. When I start my 2010 SS after I has sat for a long time it sounds like a lawnmower, after it starts to idle down, it is as quiet as a kitten, (really don't know how quiet that is) but it gets quiet. I was told it was a secondary fan or injector noises, can anyone help.

couple of things it could be

camshaft position solenoid, there is a sticky on this
or
timing chain tensioner, think there is a sticky on this too

my 09 SS does it too, i have the tensioner and intend to replace mine this weekend with the "new style" one, hope it cures it

What is the difficulty level 1-10 for removing and adjusting thr chain tensioner on a 2010 HHR SS. I was told that this would stop the thrashing noise on startup after the car has sat for a long time.

There is no adjustment, just remove the old tensioner and wind in a new style one.
You'll need a 32 mm socket and a breaker bar, then of course a torque wrench

Mike, what is your mileage there? I ask because you may want to investigate before installing a new tensioner. I bought an 08 SS with 138k. It had the chain rattle so I replaced the tensioner. Which is a difficulty level of 2. The problem I had was worn or broken guides. After installing the tensioner the rattling got worse. I'm not sure if the guide was broken already or if it gave up after the new tensioner.

Either way, the valve cover gasket is reuseable as long as you're careful. You can pull the cover off and look down the intake cam side to check the guide. It starts under the cam and goes down through the front cover. I will try and take off my 2.2 front cover tonight and get some pics (they're the same). When I pulled the front cover off the 2.0 the guide came out in 5 pieces. I found the rest in the oil pan and the pickup was packed full with plastic bits.

Not trying to scare you, hopefully you'll have a guide in there! Any questions you could PM me.

 

Hey Guys the 2010 SS has 24000 miles on it. I have been told that it could be the Chain Tensioner, or the EGR going wide open and dumping everything. After it sits and idles down, it goes quiet and and if it is parked and sits for a wile here it comes AGAIN ..........
