donbrew's advice on how to check the oil level, and the importance of it being on a level surface is highly right on!!!
I switched to a synthetic oil a while back (after running conventional oil for a few years - and encountering minimal oil usage between changes). But I switched back to regular oil when I found the engine ate just over a quart of synthetic in very short order (probably less than 3000 miles).
It took a second oil change before the oil consumption returned to it's normal amount of MAYBE a 1/8 to 1/4 of a quart in 4-5000 miles.
And often a bad drain plug gasket will leak whether the engine is running or not. But keep us posted on the outcome once it is replaced. And Sleeper is right, you can dump that oil back in as he details. Just don't contaminate it - it will be fine.
