Check engine light
had a problem with rough start and rough running after gas fill up.
at the same time the check engine light came on. I found the gas can was bad
(wouldn't lock) replaced the cap with new but the check engine light is still on.
How can I reset it.

pull the negative battery cable for 30 seconds or so. battery is under the storage in the rear next to spare tire. unfortunately you'll have to re do your presets and stuff but if your CEL doesnt go away most autoparts stores will check it for free

I don't know about other states but in California, it is actually illegal for Advance (or any other autostore) employee to clear the code(s). They'll read them but they won't clear them. According to the manager at the local Autozone, people were clearing codes before going in for a smog check. Also, codes stored during an accident were being cleared to avoid liability, as well as people clearing the codes to make it easier to sell salvaged cars. I have my own scanner, as well as computer based programs to do my own diag. but I was just curious so I asked him. I asked about customers that had their codes read there and bought parts based on that and simply wanted to make sure the part replacement solved the problem. I also pointed out that if there really was a problem that the code would return but he says that they are instructed not to clear them under any circumstances.
