Unhappy Check Engine Light, OBII Port not reading and a partridge in a pear tree!!

Ok, for the last couple of weeks, I have been trying to deal with my check engine light. I did the basic stuff first...check/change oil, check fuses etc...I finally decided to go to AutoZone to see if they could hook up the code reader and get a code for me.

BUT, when the guy attached the reader to the OBII port...nothing...He said that there is no power going to the port so the reader could not read anything. I checked (yet again) the fuses under the hood to see if any fuses were bad. The fuses were good.

The HHR runs fine...getting 30mpg and she's still got some pep in her step for being seven years old but I can't figure this out. Oh in addition, heaven forbid if I am idling for more than ten minutes because I get the "ENGINE PWR REDUCED."

So, let's recap:

Engine light on steady
OBII port inoperational
Engine pwr reduced

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I also saw something on the threads about the cigarette lighter port (front) blowing fuses. Any connection? Thanks again!!

5 seconds on the search function came up with this thread: https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/show...ht=obdII+power

ps: your sig says 2.5L when it is likely the 2.4L :)

HHR911. You said you checked the fuses under the hood. What about the interior fuse box?
Also. Did you test the fuses or just look at them?

Under hood fuse box #29 (I think) controls both the front power outlet and the OBDII connecter.

Fuse #29 is a winner...it was blown. I do not have a spare so I will buy some at AutoZone and get the check engine light rechecked.

As far as the interior fuse panel is concerned, is it on the passenger side left of the floorboard on the center panel?

I tested the fuses but at the time I didn't know that the cig lighter fuse had anything to do with the OBDII port. I'll let you know tomorrow what the verdict is. Wish me luck and thanks for the replies.

Panel just pulls off..

And fwiw: Wally world has a box of 8 mixed amp fuses (doubles) for 1/2 the price of a box of 5 @ the Zone..

I had the same exact problem, my cig element shorted to ground & blew fuse # 29, & scanner would read only "NO LINK" ....

If it blows a new fuse, remove lighter & try again..

My cig lighter now "sleeps with the fishes"........
