You need to check with your dealer, there are a couple of active TSB's on this concern. It's annoying but it won't strand you in the boonies.

I took mine in for a clunking sound (also felt it in the floor). My service dealer told me there was a maintenace notice about such a problem. Upon looking at my HHR he told me that the Steering Shaft needed to be replaced. I advice contacting the dealer about it while it is still under warranty (hopefully).

My dealer replaced a bunch of parts, finally the noise went away when they replaced the Swar Bar bushings. Silence, blessed silence now over bumps and turns.

They did, however, tell me that the intermediate steering shaft has been a problem, but that should make noise pretty constantly over bumps, noy only when turning.

Finally

I finally took my car in for the recall and also mentioned the clunking noise. THey fixed it by replacing a steering shaft that they advised is by the firewall. The Service agent told me that it did not have any lubrication and that is what was causing the clunk noise.

I dropped off the car during the day and they did the recall and installed a new steering shaft. Woo Hoo!!!! THe noise is gone.
