Clutch slowly going, what to do

2007 HHR LS 5spd.

180,xxx miles and I just took it into the shop to fix the master cylinder after the pedal stuck to the floor. First time i've ever had this problem.

I've had the car since 30,xxx miles and taken it in for more than average service (i.e. more than just oil changes) so i've felt i've taken good care of it.

I'm moving to Germany in a month and was planning on selling it anyway. But now the shop tells me the pedal is pushing harder than it should.

Nervous on how long the clutch will last as well as what the worth would be (i'm sure less than before which was already low due to miles)

So my question is how do I go about selling/fixing/determining.

It won't be worth fixing for a grand and then trying to sell if I only get barely over that unless I find the right buyer and sell it for 2 or 3k. And I don't necessarily want to let it die as it is or run it to death.

Is it best to try and sell it and get the invoice from the mechanic saying the clutch is going and sell it less than norma, as is?

Appreciate any help.

Economically, your best bet would be to get some firm quotes by reputable mechanics on replacing the clutch.

Then advertise the vehicle in "As Is" condition, noting the mileage and the need for imminent clutch replacement.

That way any prospective buyers will know that you are being totally honest and above board with them, and you'll probably get your asking price.

Check the vehicle's value using KBB, or by having it appraised by CarMax, etc. Then average the quotes on clutch replacement together, and either deduct that from your asking price, or use it as a bargaining tool with prospective buyers.

P.S. thanks for remembering NADA Powermizer, my Thinker slipped a gear there.

NADA gives it 3200 for a clean retail and then 1500 clean trade in then 875 for average trade in.

Waiting to hear again from the shop tomorrow about their clutch estimate.

KBB gives it just under 2k for private listing at good condition or 1660 for fair.

Seems likely that if it's a grand to fix then a rough value of 2k then seems i'll be making about a grand no matter what.

I'll wait to hear from shop and go from there.

Appreciate the help.

Check with some independent shops, you should be able to get a clutch replacement for under a grand. Might even be able to pick up the parts yourself and have someone install for even less. The more you do, the cheaper the cost will be.

Just got it back and master cylinder broke again.

Clutch with labor is 1100.

I was already wanting to sell it because moving to Germany October 6th. Now i'm even more into needing to sell. I can't fix it and then sell bc I won't get what I can. My plan is to try and sell it as is for 1k or less.

Sigh. Of course so many terrible things are happening before I move overseas. Appreciate the help everyone.

How does the master cylinder get "broke again"?

Maybe they mean slave cylinder?

I see that foofoomaru has decided to sell the car "as is".
He posted an ad in our sites classified section.

Sorry. Couldn't find this post for some reason.

Am deciding to sell as is. Move to germany in a month and cannot fix this and waste money on it.

donbrew - it's the plastic piece that connects to the clutch pedal. I believe i was told it was the master cylinder. Either way, that piece broke again. They said because the clutch must be worse than it is that it broke it again. They test drove it and it was fine but I got home and broke five minutes later.

Stressful but it isn't a massive thing so I guess if I lose out on it, dammit. But It won't kill me. Just stressed on how to get rid of it.

Sell it as is. Some mechanic will pick it up to fix and flip. I'm not completely sure your clutch is worn out. That usually doesn't cause high pedal forces, just slipping. You could have a bad cable, or maybe something is sticky/binding somewhere.
