Question Confused

Can someone PLEASE tell me what would make the steering wheel/column (from wheel to floor) BUT MOSTLY THE STEERING WHEEL, Sound & Feel like it is loose, It SEEMS 'solid' when I try to wiggle, wobble, & shake it. I tried to find somewhere that would be loose, but came up with nothing. I Don't want to mess to much with the wheel because I DO NOT want the air bag to go off. When I go over bounces, (or when I put on the brakes the shimmy, shake, rattle, & roll happens, but I think that may be from the driver's side rotor needing resurfaced. -That is a total different problem-.) I can Feel the shaking in the wheel, as if it is loose. (The shimmy from the brake-rotor is understandable, BUT confused when going over bumps.) Anyone have similiar experiences? Does anyone have any Thoughts? Can someone give me some advice on what to do to see IF the wheel/column is loose?

I guess the first question would be.....

What happens to make you believe the steering wheel is "loose"? If you have a FRONT rotor or brake problem, you will feel the shake in the steering wheel when applying the brakes.

What else happens? Does the SAME symptoms occur when you just go over bumps?

When I go over a bounce, it sounds & feels like the steering wheel is loose & shakes a bit. It IS more prominate when applying the brakes as you said, which is when it ALWAYS happens.

Have it checked out by a competent mechanic, it could be a number of things from a failing hub bearing to a bad strut mount just as examples.

The Steering column does not extend to the floor, just to the electric motor right behind the dash..

The support bolts might be something to check. There are threads here w/pics about this..

I understand you... For the noise over bumps, try to replace the sway bar bushings. For the noise on the steering wheel, clunks, clanks, etc etc, if this is made when you turn your steering wheel at low speeds or idle, this is a complex issue. I heard that the Intermediate steering shaft (the one that is between inside the car and the engine compartment) has poor lubrication, and this noise can be considered as "normal".

My '06 does the same thing as you're describing. I know I have warped rotors, not sure if that could be the cause, but I doubt it since it does it even when going slow and not applying the brakes. I'm out of warranty, so I'm not going to do a thing about it until it becomes a problem or worse. No money.
