Coolant temp issue

First off I'll say I'm new to this car just bought it a month ago.

Anyways, drive trus and sitting still for a bit will send my coolant temp upwards of 240°+/-. I blast the heat to keep it down and that seems to help. But when I get moving again it immediately drops back to 199-201°. One of my friends suggest that ther is air in the system and should get a coolant flush, but I wanted to see if anyone's else as had this happen to them before I spent money.

The radiator fan should come on when the temp gets to about 120F, then go off when it gets back to 180F. It also is supposed to come on when you turn the A/C on.

First, check that the fan is working.

Please give more details about the car; year, model, mileage etc.

Fans are on the whole time when the temps are that high.

Welcome to the site.

On the SS, the fan should run all the time the car is on. It has a control module (only on the SS) that is on the fan itself. The module controls the speed of the fan based on engine temp.

Could be air in the system. Any noticeable coolant leaks ? Or, have you had to add any coolant ?

My suggestion would be a coolant flush, thermostat change (AC Delco brand only ) and refill the coolant, (DexCool only). Refill the system with the front of the car raised 6-8 inches higher than the rear to eliminate any air getting trapped.

Sorry bout that, no visible leaks that I've noticed and I haven't had to add coolant...yet.

But I had to go somewhere today and even when sitting still in an open area and getting up to speed the temp climbed upwards of 236° and then all of a sudden dropped to 199-201° and lower it even dropped to 189° which is the lowest I've seen it since I bought the car.
