Park the HHR front bumper higher then the rear, after a 20 minute drive, let it cool off overnight, open the rad cap and top it off with coolant, you might have to do this 3 or4 times to burp the air out of the system.
You might need to run the heater full hot to get the coolant to follow through the heater core.
If that fails, a new thermostat, yes, an AC Delco 131-158 might be a good idea.
The coolant is 7 years old if it’s the original coolant, 2 years past it’s useful life!

Hopefully it’s just the only step, but at least it’s the first and least expensive step!
Is you coolant original, or did you change it in 2016?

What light is on? I can't find a low coolant level light in the Manual.

This is exactly what I was wondering. If this is the Check Engine Light, you need to have the codes read, post the alphanumeric here.

The Manual shows 100,000 miles light duty or "5 years".

Which ever comes first.

I would just go ahead and change it now and then you can work through the Burping Etc.

Buy Dex Cool Premix.

Otherwise buy just straight Dex Cool and Mix 50/50 with Distilled water for best results.

Also it would not hurt to change the Thermostat as long as you have the block drained.
Be sure to use the OEM AC recommended part.
