I have a nice long crack in my windshield about the size of my air vent in the front window and am wondering how much it will cost to replace, and where to get it done??

I use Safelite 1151, there should be one in your area, never had any complaints. Did this crack start with a stone chip or did it break when you turned on the defrost. The reason I'm asking is that if it was caused be a rock thrown by another vehicle, you can claim it with your insurance. As far as cost goes, if you have to pay out of your own pocket expect about $200-250 at the most.

Does it matter if I do not have windshield coverage?

Type in replacement windshield and it will bring up quite a few threads. Just don't forget that they come with and without the tinted strip at the top.

If you have full coverage on your car already-add the glass coverage for a few dollars. Then if you don't have to get your car inspected for a few months wait it out and then get it changed under insurance just before the inspection.

I already had full glass on all my cars so my wounderfull hole from a rock that was aimed at my face (kicked up from a car passing me-their tire must have hit the rock just right to kick it up on a diagnal into my windshield-thank god for safety glass) was fixed by getting a new windsheild. I had a choice of tinted strip or clear. I got the clear only because my wife doesn't like the limited view from the windows and if she has to drive it in an emegency I don't want her to feel "closed in". The local company came to my house, set up shop outside with a special windsheild stand and had it done in less than a hour start to finish and were clean with no scratches or dent put in the hood or side pillers.

Just make sure to tell the window guys to be carefull of the area in front of the passanger side under the plastic covering (over the wiper assembly) because there is a flimsey cover underneath that that covers a hole over your cabin filter. If it cracks or gets loose you'll end up with leaks.

If you know anybody in the auto body or used car business, they get considerable discounts and could probably save you $100 and they still make some money. Most windshields cost them less than $150 installed.

Do you only have liability insurance? My comprehensive covers glass with no deductible.

With progressive though, you have to have their specific windshield replacement add-on for a cpl more bucks a month.
