Drops out of Cruise Control

Saturday I had to make a 60 mile trip. A little over half way Cruise control stopped working. I reset it and it worked correctly the remainder of the trip to my destination. Then on my way back about 20 miles into the return trip it did it again. I reset it and it worked correctly the rest of the way home. When I got home I searched this site but did not find any similar problems. There were examples of Cruise not working but not like my problem. Thinking back I am reasonably certain my foot did not bump the brake pedal. I could have bumped the accelerator pedal but that should not make the cruise stop. Hopefully this is not a preview of an oncoming problem...this is my concern. If it is a preview I want to try and head it off. Anyone have any ideas? The funny thing is it happened about the same geographic location both times. Surely nothing external could have caused this to happen. Don't laugh at me I don't think the black helicopters zapped my car I just mentioned it because I thought it strange that it was at about the same spot both times when it happened. No hills in the area so no stress on the cruise control.

Take a forty five mile drive to test the location theory, I could have been caused by a loose brake light bulb, any bumps on that stretch or highway?

It is Interstate 12 and a pretty good road. I'll check the bulbs today sometime.

You may have encountered a code that needs a repeat to light the CEL. Like a misfire.

If I remember correctly Oldblue, the CC system is dependent on the 3rd brake light bulbs ?
Not sure about the other 2 brake lights. Just recall if a 3rd light bulb is out that the system won't engage.

You are correct about the third brake light being out causing the cruise control not to work but all the bulbs in my third brake light are good and functioning. And like I said in the original post the cruise reset(although manually) immediately and worked perfectly the rest of the trip.

Aliens? Many possible causes, from codes to lose third brake light bulbs to a failing brake switch. Let us know what you find!

If you have a scan tool you can look at the brake pedal position sensor and see how sensitive it is.

May just need and adjustment.

On my 2007 LT2 I had two switches on the break pedal lever and both had weak brackets aligning them with the pedal arm. Once I got things straightened out my cruise control worked fine. You might take a look under the dash to see how they look.

Well I have been over that stretch of road 4 times since the initial incident with no sign of problem. In fact it has never happened again. I checked bulbs in third brake light, all good. No codes. Guess I will mark it down as 'just one of those things' and...life goes on. Thanks for everyone's responses.
