Engine soundling like an airplane

Hello all, I am going to be dropping my HHR off at the dealer on Monday, but I wanted to know if anyone has any idea on what this problem may be. Which just has started as of recent.

As I start to accelerate, maybe hitting about 30-40 miles an hour the engine gets real loud, almost like an airplane as my son says. The RPM's dont seem to be to high? and it still drives well, no hesitation or anything like that.

Like I mentioned, I am dropping it off on monday (still under warrenty) but just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on what this might be?

Thanks!

I had a similar problem, you didn't mention it, but mine only did it when the A/C was running. Ended up being the A/C compressor.

Not actually hearing it makes it difficult for someone else.

However, do not be surprised if it's not the flex joint in the exhaust downpipe. I've seen a few of these crack and leak.

Doing it with or wothout AC, as I get to about 30 or so....I know it was hard to explain this without the sound, I just thought I would throw it out there. After the dealer lets me know I will post it on the board

Dropped off car this morning, it was a front bearing that needed to be replaced.

Had the same thing happen........to both sides. At different times of course. Hope both of yours go while it's still under warranty. Seems to be a common problem in the '06 HHR's.

First I've heard of it on this forum at least. Did your dealer state it was a "common problem in the '06..."?

I've had mine since June 06 with a little over 16000 miles no issues (knocking on particle board wood) except for the wobbling rotors - which will be replaced w/aftermarket rotors

Hi Grumpee......Yes, Dealer stated that it was a common problem. When I went in with the first one, I told them it sounded like a front bearing and they just acted like they expected it. Shift assembly went pretty early on too, put the key in the ignition and it got stuck and then the car wouldn't go into gear.(Also common). Changed the whole shift column without batting an eye. I haven't had any problems with the rotors yet. The pads need changed pretty soon. But no other issues. Quite a few little quirks with the '06 but still love her! Glad to hear yours is still going strong! :)

OOPS, I forgot, had the key stuck, shifter stuck in gear thing. That was fun getting her towed to the dealer - warranty repair.
