Engine Swap

Hi everyone,
I have a very tired 2.2L in my 2008 HHR Panel and searching for a replacement. Don't want to spend a fortune. Not having much luck with finding a 2008. I have found a number of 2007's and from my understanding, this engine should work except for the exhaust manifold.
Can anyone verify that? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I don't know what is different about the exhaust manifold. A 2007 2.2L will work replacing a 2008 2.2L.

If the 2008 is "tired" what do you think a 2007 would be?

Looking at car-part.com, they show 2006 2.2L exhaust manifolds not matching 2007 and later models (they ask if you are looking for a manifold "drilled and tapped for AIR check valve").

Searching for a 2007 and later manifold shows matches from 2007-2011 without any AIR questions.

From this it looks like 2007 and later exhaust manifolds are the same.

For the 2.2, 2007 and 2008 will interchange, the 2006 , 2009,10,11’s are different.

Thanks for the replies. This will help.
donbrew, as for a 2007 being tired, that's possible. My point being the only 2008's I can find have over 170K miles and they want $1500-2200 for them. If I'm going to shell out that kind of money, I can rebuild mine. I have found some 2007's with 150k or less for $800 or less.

Unless you have cylinder or bearing damage a new head and timing set will be pretty economical, especially if you can do it yourself.

I was under the impression that the HHR never had AIR, they ask because other applications did. The possible difference is the O2 sensor bung and that is easily dealt with. I don't know what is different about the VVT exhaust manifolds, they look the same to me.

There are some differences inside the 2.2L between 2007 and 2008, not that would really matter to you. I think they changed the casting method.

$1500-2200 for a used 2.2 with that high of mileage ? That is ridiculous.
The 2007 used engine for my wife"s Hyundai was $1100 with 78k miles.

I thought they were still in the $850 range.

You should be able to get a 2.2 with just over 100K miles for $700 or less.

How are you searching for the engine?

Did you try car-part.com?
