Exhaust cool down noise

I've had my 09 2LT for about 2 weeks now and absolutely love it. I traded in an 06 LS HHR. One difference between the LS and the 2LT is that when the 2LT is cooling down, the exhaust makes a constant ticking sound for several minutes. While all of my previous vehicles have made some noise during cool down, the noise from the 09 is really noticeable. Anyone have similar experiences???

Yep, mine's been doing that since day one (Sept 05). It's more noticeable on some days that others.

My 06 cracks and pops once shut off. I never thought much about it.

Every car I've owned (except the truck) has done this...

I think it's metal expanding or contracting from the heat or something...

My 01 Sierra does this, I believe it's because they use stainless steel for the exhausts now and it's thinner

That's the built-in timer in the computer, counting down the seconds until the next time the check engine light comes on!

15 minutes after shutting our HHR off I can walk into the garage and it will tick once every 3 seconds. If I walk up to the tailpipe and touch it with my shoe it quits.

mine does the same thing. It ticks like no car I've ever heard before. I've asked all sorts of people and they say it's no big deal.

I also have the loud whine of the fuel filter in the back. It takes some getting used to. Just keep your tank full and your stereo up and you'll never notice it!

Yup, mine ticks like crazy. Like the others have said, it is simply what they do.
