I have read the post about your engine cooling fan continuing to run for 5 to 10 minutes after you shut off your vehicle. Could I please, have the year of your HHR? I would like to exhaust my resources to hopes to assist you with this.

mine does it occasionally and i live in the furnace in south florida - never noticed what the temps were when it does that but i always considered it normal - many cars do this - it only runs for 30 seconds or less - i'd worry if it didnt run

 

I move that you first check your coolant level. I don't know if the fan is triggered by coolant temp or engine temp, they are different. That's why while the indicator on the instrument cluster indicates "normal", the DIC temp reads 216F, the sensors are in different places.

I once had a VW Rabbit, the temp gauge was reading "normal", but the engine was acting like it was overheating. Turned out that the temp sensor was in the top of the radiator, no coolant = normal temp, the AIR in the radiator was normal temp, too bad there was NO coolant.

But having said that, most cars with electric fans DO run after the key is switched off. My question has always been "why doesn't mine".

Also, I believe that the fan does not even run unless the A/C is turned on under normal conditions.

 

This is a 2008 HHR that is having this problem.

I checked the coolant level and added a bottle of water wetter that got it above the full cold mark. I drove it 30 miles this morning to the Chevy dealer and it ran mostly in the 201 to 214 range, but it was only 75 outside. When I shut it off at the dealer it was at 212 and the fan did not come on.

I will post again after the dealership looks at it.

 

mine did that too after racing my friend a couple of times, it was super hot, i was wondering the same thing so i just left it for 20 mns or so, came back and it was off

 

This was normal with old Saabs (which Chevy stole the engine design from) The heat actually rises after shut-down, triggering the cooling fan.

 

They did not actually "steal" the design from Saab; GM bought Saab. And now I think Saab went the way of Hummer.

 

The dealership checked out the car and found nothing wrong with the cooling system. They added some coolant and said it is working properly.

I haven't actually driven it and checked it out for myself yet. I purchased two new keyfobs, and when they tried to program them last night, the HHR would not communicate with the keyfobs. They have taken care of that this morning, and my wife is picking it up. I will post more results later.

 

Looks like it is running fine now after a bottle of water wetter and adding some coolant. The wife drove it 25 miles with it 92 outside and it is running at 202.
