x2 - Just hit 3000 about 100 miles ago and got the oil changed this weekend. Put in a synthetic blend (all they had this time) and will follow the DIC from here out for awhile and see how it goes.

FWIW - My oil life indicator was still showing 59% at 3100 miles so I am guessing it could have went to 5000 or so.

I change the oil myself every 6 months.

With my previous synthetic oil change (last fall) I went 8100 miles in spring/summer/early fall driving and the DIC said 16% oil life left when I changed it. The oil was tested by Blackstone labs and was in very good shape when it was changed.

This time around, synthetic again, the DIC is at 9% and only 6500 miles so far. Winter driving takes a heavy toll on oil, whether it's regular or synthetic. I will be changing it out next weekend.

eljae.....

You appear to be a new member based on your post count, so I'll just say, you need to do some research (on this forum and others) in regard to some of your statements. Many of the points you have made have been discussed and rebuked.

By the way, GM has been using Mobile 1 in Corvettes for way more than 2 years (it was GM's "pioneer" car for synthetic, I believe).

Your "reputable distributor" is questionable, if he in fact told you that. Many vehicles now are delivered from the factory (with obviously a lot less than 12,000 miles ) with synthetic oil.......something like several million since 1992. During the assembly process of these engines, NO different or unusual processes are used because the vehicle is filled with synthetic oil. I posted a previous thread regarding GM's direct statement regarding this, if you care to look it up. So, if in fact the Corvettes as you stated, experienced valve problems I would suggest it was an inherent problem with the valves, not the oil.

Oh and by the way, NONE of Schaeffer's lubricants are on GM's approved list of oils. Thus, they do not meet GM specifications. But, if they work well for you, that's good.

And the OLI works on something a LITTLE more than engine RPM's (although that is the major factor in the algorithum, if you care to look that up as well). It's been discussed here previously.

Thanks!

Thanks all for the comments. I think I'll error on the safe side and change oil 1500 miles. I was planning on going with synthetic, but now I think I may wait a bit.

This may open up another can of worms, but are the opinions on Mobile 0W-30 synthetic? Does it help with fuel mileage, as claimed?

I wouldn't use it because it is not recommended by GM and if I sustained some type of warranty claim, related to engine wear, AND GM determined I was using 0w-30, the claim may/could be denied.

But, you need to do what you feel and think is best for your situation.

I kept the factory oil in my car to 11,000 miles or so until the DIC indicated "Change Oil Soon".

I was looking at the Mobil 1 0W-30 bottle yesterday. It claims to meet GM's specs and gives you a whopping 2% increase in fuel mileage. So if you get 400 miles out of a tank now, you might get 408. Not much difference in the long run.

+1 on Snoopy's post. GM has been factory filling the Corvette with Mobil 1 for nearly 25 years now.

Mobil 1 0w-30 is on the GM6094M registered products
see Handy reference: List of oils that meet GM6094M spec

Sorry, I should have been clearer in my statement .

I was speaking specifically of the weight, 0w-30. I believe the Owners Manual states do not use anything other than 5w-30 (although, I think, for my geographic area, 10w-30 would be better).

But yes, you are correct. 0W-30 in Mobile 1 is an approved oil for GM vehicles. Which ones, or under what circumstances, I can only guess.

Oh, and that list you referenced has been updated again, as of Feb. 2008. Some added, some deleted.
