First post...Tranny ? and RPM's

Hey all,

Just inherited a 2006 with the 2.2L engine and 4-speed automatic transmission from my father in-law. He did a ton of highway driving and the car has 218,000 miles on it. For oil, he has been religious about changing between 4-5K miles using Mobil 1 Synthetic since about 50K miles.

I've driven GM cars/trucks all my life but nothing with an engine this small so here is my question...

The transmission shifts fine but when getting up to highway speeds 65-75mph, it never really feels like it is shifting into what "feels" like overdrive. I can feel it shift through all 4 gears but it seems like it is winding out and I'm at 3000rpms at 70mph. Is this normal for this engine/drivetrain package?

Thanks!

Welcome to the site, Don't think I have checked that but my 2.4 has to work a little to keep up with the 2.0. Would be nice to replace the fluid, I'm sure there are a lot of answers to when, I say when you change the plugs.

My 2.4 runs around 2100-2200 rpms at 60 mph. It climbs fast to 3000 after that. But it runs 1500-1600 rpms at 40 mph. My last 2.2 panel did the same if I remember correctly.

quick check next time..watch rpms and lift off throttle..if rpms stay 'about' the same then your in lockup..if it drops like 500 rpm them your converter isnt locking up,,,,otherwise it sounds about right..and will still get good milage..

After many miles at speeds of 70-75, I will say that you have a converter problem. The tachometer should rest at an indicated area of 2500-2700 RPM at those speeds.

You might also try to cruise at about 70 MPH and watch the tach. Move the gear selector to the "I" location. If your converter was locked, the car will shift back to 3rd gear and the tach will indicate a rise of approx. 500 RPM. If it doesn't display what I mentioned, you probably have a converter problem (but with these cars, it COULD be a module problem).

Thanks for the help, I will run it on the highway and drop into "I" and watch the RPM's.

Ok, so say it's the converter...what is the avg price to fix something like that. I know anytime you repair tranny/converters it's $$

Thanks,
B
