For the past couple of months I have had a humming sound coming from my front end. It is only noticible when I am driving on the highway over 40 mph. It kind of sounds like tire or road noise. Could it be the wheel bearings or the CV joint? Nothing seems loose when the car is on a lift and I move the wheels.

Most of the time it a wheel bearing issue .. How many miles? The stock ones last about 70,000 give or take a few and the drivers 9 out 10 is first .. On that note replaced both .. There is a video on it just goggle

 

Thanks for the replies. Car has about 70k miles. I checked on Rock Auto-they have many brands, ranging from Magneti at $174, Moog at $108, AC Delco at $107, Timken at $114, Raybestes at $102, and the Value Pro at $61.

That's up to your wallet .. If your doing the job your self and are going to keep the car another 70,000 go to eBay and check there some brands like ska,Detroit bearing, a lot of them are made in China even timkin now .. So it's a crap shoot go with the cheap bearings if your doing the job yourself ...

 

I went with the Timken. Several people here liked them, and a good friend that races NASCAR and has a custom shop says that they are well known throught the industry for good bearings.

I'm not sure what year your HHR is, but if I remember right, the 2007-2009 HHRs include the hubs in the 100k powertrain warranty.

I replaced the front and rear hubs before a long trip last year on my '08 at around 125k. None of them were acting up in any way, but I figured it was wise to do so at the house and not somewhere on the road just in case. I went with the Timkens due to their reputation for being good. I was fortunate in that I found the front ones on sale at Autozone for only $93 each.

Mute point about the powertrain warranty since the 5 year period would be up.
"5 years or 100k miles, whichever occurs first"
