Fuel Pump Replacment

HI ALL,
I have a 2008 HHR. Starting rough all of a sudden and runs ok after starting. I have 201200 miles on it. All has been good but now engine light. I had a Suburban before this HHR and had to replace fuel pump about 5 times. If I have to replace fuel pump on this HHR I will have to remove a trailer hitch bracket and don't want to if possible. My son went in to the back of his firebire and cut through above the fuel pump and just went in that way and didn't lower the tank. Any one ever cut through to the pump? That would be so much easier. I don't know exactly in what area the pump is located. Why oh Why don't they build cars where can just go in from above and not lower the tank. Any and all help appreciated. You can email me to the side also at my photobug98@hotmail.com if you wish.
Thanks to any that can help.

You might want to.
1 Pull the code to see what it is.
2 Do a fuel pressure test and volume test, before just replacing it.

Note: I have done 100's of pumps in the Suburban's and have not seen but 1 fail in an HHR.

I think that the "hole" in the floor for fuel pump access is gone because of stricter crash standards. If the fuel tank ruptures in a crash and the floor buckles the gaps in the floor might let in fuel.

Catalytic Convertor and code PO171

HI,
Still seeking answers to the engine light on my 2008 HHR. I have been heaing a rattle for some time and think might be cat convertor breaking down. I know in my past vehicle it got so stopped up if finally would stall out the car. Right now I have a PO 171 and have installed plugs, looked for vacuum leak but as yet need to get a fuel pressure gage to check fuel pressure.
Just wondered if the cat breaking down would throw a 171 code. Most posts indicate vacuum leak or fuel pressure.
Thanks for any and all help.
