Fuse Blows When Jumpstarting?
#41
My free subscription to this forum just paid for itself! I too jumped my 2007 HHR only I used my battery charger and put the + lead on the red post after removing the fuse box cover then placed the - cable on the exposed post which is black. It sparked real quick and I thought I had a bad ground so I moved it to an engine bracket and charged the battery. I didn't know the PS quit working until the next day when I went to drive it. Thanks to this thread I'm only out a fuse and 60 seconds or so of my life! Wouldn't you think BOTH posts would be marked RED on that box for us old-timers?

I used the owner's manual to jump start my HHR, which was no help! The manual didn't have information on where to hook the jumper cables, it said there were terminals under the hood and the battery was at the back. To jump start it, we had to go to the battery in the back, which is very difficult to access!! I will have to print this and put it in my owners manual for future reference!

Not sure what you were reading but the owners manual instructions were about 4 pages long WITH pictures of the connection points.
Here's just a part of it:
4.You will not see the battery of your vehicle under
the hood. It is located in the rear cargo area.
You will not need to access your battery for jump
starting. The vehicle has a remote positive (+) and a
remote negative (−) jump starting terminal.
Locate the remote positive
terminal which is located
under a red tethered
cap on the engine
compartment fuse block.
Remove the cap to access
the terminal.
Do not remove fuse block cover to jump start the
vehicle.
Locate the remote
negative (−) ground
terminal, marked GND (−),
which is located at the
front of the engine
compartment on the driver
side of the vehicle.

My neighbor needed a jump and the wife jumped the car. PS no go. I found 2 fuse panels in my 2006. The inside panel on the pass had a fuse marked (19) for powersteering. it was no where near the 60 amp noted above. So what is the correct location of this fuse.
Thanks
Mike

Wouldn't it be a good idea for automakers to get together and make standard plugs to jumpstart vehicles that can't be connected the wrong way. The safety aspect alone would make it worthwhile. I'll suggest it to NHTSA.

The Govt filmstrip they showed us in 4th grade specifically told us that we'd have Atomic Powered flying cars by 1980, I'm still waiting.

My battery died last week. He had no idea where to jump it from. I took off the fuse box cover and showed him the positive, then before I knew it he put the negative wire on the other hot terminal. I quickly yanked it off and explained to him that it can't go there.
Another problem is that the bolts for the shock assembly, which the factory says to use as a ground, may not work. In my car, I had to run a jumper cable from one of those bolts to the engine block (and I also did one on the other side).
When you do it correctly, no fuses should blow.
