Headlamps won't shut off...

So the battery died in my wife's 2006 HHR, so I went, got another one popped
it in, all better. She ran some errands in it then comes home. About half an hour later, a neighbor knocks on the door, tells us the headlights are on.
Go out to the car, cannot turn them off. I turn the Auto Lights off, display reads "Auto Lights Off". Get out of the car, lock it, wait for awhile and they do not shut off after 20 or 30 seconds like they should. There is no ding, ding, ding or any other indication that the head lights are on, but they are.
I unhooked the battery, let the car sit for a couple hours, went back out hooked up the battery, headlights came back on. Go to the fusebox under the hood, pull the fuse, lights go off. Put back in, on again. Tried swapping it with the highbeam fuse, thinking maybe it was bad or something, no difference.
I'm stumped. I have never had this happen with any other vehicle. I have figgeted with the knob turning the Auto Light On, then Off, close the door wait for a minute or so, nothing. Head lights still stay on.
Any suggestions, similiar experiences?
Thanks,
Ed

There is a low and high beam relay in 71 and 72. Switch them and see what happens. The relay may be stuck.

Where? I just tried swapping the fuses directly behind 71 and 72 (63, 65, 66, 67) but didn't seem to make a difference. Is that what you are refering to?
Thanks for the reply btw.

I believe he wants you to swap the relays...

Sorry about the short answer, I was real busy at the time. What I am saying is #71 is the low beam relay and #72 is the high beam relay, but they should be identical. The contacts maybe stuck on the relay and if you switch them and they go out you know that only a relay is needed.

If they stay on after the switch you may have a bad head lamp switch, a problem in the BCM, a short to battery, a short to ground, a bad connection at the fuse box or switch or ground...and the list goes on.

Yeah, swapped 71 and 72 relays, no luck. Well, it's going into the dealership tomorrow, so I'm sure they will find it(and hopefully it won't cost me an arm and a leg).
But thanks anyway

I know the thread is old, but what was the fix to this?
The DIC for high beams keeps flickering on mine, I pulled the relay to the high beam the other days as my high beams wouldnt turn off even though the interior switch is in its typical "low beam" position)
Now the DIC light remains on mostly and randomly isnt lit as it feels 🤷*♀️. But, I have one car and one income so I cant be throwing it at a dealer
Also, might be worth mentioning, the front cigarette lighter doesnt work, nor does my OBDii port but..fuses are perfectly fine for it! Even bought 2 new ones to test the damn thing still a no go!

Does your HHR have a lighter or smoker package our the 12 volt power outlet?

For the headlights; try the advice given previously.

For the OBD/cig lighter; either a wire is fried or fuse #29 under hood is blown.

Unless you need warranty or recall work there is absolutely no need to use a dealer service dept.

So. You posted up last year about having electrical problems. Since you never came back to those threads and did any followup, it would be hard to give you any sound advice now. Update what has been done about your previous issues.

(FWIW. I'll wager a guess and say your current problem may be related to the previous ones. )
