No, it is not a common problem. Yes you can replace them, preferably in pairs, but not imperative you do so. Yes, aftermarket ones are ok, and are probably the easiest to obtain.

Thank you for the info, I have the gm numbers and I'll start looking on the internet. I assume they are easy to replace

Millie, WELCOME to the forums.. Also try VIP Auto parts.. They are changing to O Riely's here in Maine! If your near Bangor also try B & L Auto parts, Ask for Tommie, He is great to deal with!

I would call Chevrolet Customer Service and tell them the story.
I think hatch strut failure @ 37,000 is pre-mature.
Be nice but let them now thats what you think and see if they will help you replace them before you go out on your own.
Sometimes they agree and make it at least partially right.
The 1-800 Phone number is in your owners manual.
If your not happy with what they offer then go ahead and buy them and install.

I am at 130,000km (80,778 miles) and my right strut had gone unexpectedly when I opened it to put a TV in the back. I went to PartSource and purchased two StrongARM (#6123). They ran approx. $32CDN individually (on sale, regular price they go for nearly $50CDN/strut!). Unfortunate thing to spend money on, but when I tried loading my bicycle into the back to take down to repair shop I realized how important having that part work is.
