About a month ago I drove through paint that was spilled on the road. In most cars the paint would have hit the wheel wells, the back of the car and maybe a little on the side. In my HHR it sprayed paint top to bottom from the front doors all the way back. Since then I have been researching this issue and the only problem more discussed is the shift/key locking. So why is Chevy still trying to rip us off by selling the step assists for $550? The rear lift gate is cheaper than the step assists. I'm not asking for free step assists just give me a fair price and admit that there is a flaw. This is the issue with GM that is bankrupting them. Blame me for buying the car and ignore the problem.

You are confusing a design flaw with an attribute of a design. If it was a flawed design it would not have lasted for 8 decades.

Keep your car in the garage if your so worried about everyday, run of the mill, who gives a crap wear and tear. Just dodge the 200mph rocks and do jumps over gravel like I do. It's the real world out there! If it's a show car, keep it at the show! I use mine to get around. Touching up paint is part of owning any car. Blaming the MFR because you drive over a pebble! WTF ladies! You wanted the big fenders because it looks cool... you didn't think about how they are out in the line of fire? Come on!
A design flaw would be if the rocks constantly hit you in the face, that would suck.

I've seen lots without the "step assists" around (prolly 06, mind you). WTF is a "step assist"? Does anybody actually use these to assist their step? Who's got the JACKED UP HHR? I call them running boards. I think it just looks better with them. You can stand on the outside with the window open and drive with a 2x4 to the gas pedal, it's AWESOME.
