HHR Rattling sound when driving over uneven surfaces
#21
My steering wheel is just slightly off centre to the left (came from the factory that way).
I have an odd metallic noise in the steering column that goes away if I put upward pressure on the steering wheel, but only when the interior is cold. Goes away once the interior is warmed up (at least it seems that way).
glb, seems odd that they would charge you for an alignment after doing steering work.
With the dealership I go to, if any of the front end components are changed (PS rack, ball joints, tie rod ends, etc) they automatically do an alignment as part of the warranty work.

I purchased mine used 10,000 miles and the steering wheel was pretty far off center to the right. I worked out on purchase for the dealer to fix it. Next day after purchase they did a front end alignment and now its perfect!

Black Rose, Understood..thus the shouting match in the middle of the the service Dept with all of their customers watching in disbelief! Gm actually contacted me and researched the incident. Received a call from the dealership immediately after GM contacted me. My parts would be in the next day and the car would be ready for me. Well, parts came in (this was on a Tuesday) and car was not ready until Friday. Heaven knows what else they had to do to it, but I pretty much have an entire new front-end..the rattle is gone, and the car drives like a champ now. The steering ended up much tighter than it's ever been and feels much more solid than it used to. I'm supposed to call GM back and let them know how the vehicle is. They promsed to compensate me for what I had to pay out-of-pocket. I'll let you all know how it goes.

I have the very same problem with my 1LT 2.4 auto. Its a metallic noise mainly when it's cold and putting upward pressure on the steering wheel makes it go away. They have already replaced the steering column once along with the intermediate shaft and replced the steering rack under the car twice. Have you fixed yours yet? and what did they replace? My noise has been there almost since day one but it's a little worse now. any info will be greatly appreciated.
Good luck.
