HHR SS problems

I was on my way to work yesterday at 3:45 in the morning when the problem began. I was on cruise control at about 70 mph when the engine stumbled a little. About 10 seconds later, the engine reduced power alert came up on the dash. A few seconds later the service engine light came on. I pulled over quickly and tried to figure out what was going on. I shut it off and restarted it to see if it would clear, no change. I pulled back on to the highway and continued on to work. When these things say reduced power, they aren't kidding. It was a real adventure trying not to get run over.
I had to wait awhile until the dealership opened to call. My salesman brought a new Tahoe to me and took my SS back with him. I stopped by the dealer on the way home and they told me that it looks like a bad fuel pump. They have to order it from GM performance division. Hopefully it won't take too long. I gave them the Tahoe back, since I have a 07 Avalanche at home already, and took a Cobalt. Don't need another gas hog.
I will update everyone when I get this resolved.

Got the SS back at noon today. The mechanical high pressure fuel pump failed. That is what they replaced. Runs good again. Hopefully this isn't a design problem.

hi BOB.....you should check thru out the pontiac solisitice forum and see if they have ever reported any similar problems. In general, what happens to that drivetrain will possibly happen to the HHR's too, no?

Cooch, I did go to the Solstice forums and didn't see anything about fuel pump problems. Hopefully it is just a freak thing. At least my dealer really came through for me. It was done in less than 24 hours.

I had fuel tank pressure sensor failure. Engine emissions light no longer on. Fixed. Premature death at less than 55,000 miles in my view.

Mine did the same thing. Engine light icon came on and went into limp mode. Checked my codes when I got home; showed a P0087 = low fuel rail pressure issue. Dealer replaced the mechanical pump under warranty (~47K).

At the risk of getting flamed for not having an SS, I have to say that this problem occurs on all HHR models, Mine is an LT and got that problem. The thing is, mine was a misfire on cyl3 and may have been a clogged injector. it cleared itself but the car's power was way low. I think the CPU limits power to protect the engine in these situations. I don't know why or how they just go away on their own though.

^ Sticky injectors can go away by themselves, but the SS has direct injection, and I think the fuel pump issue there is different. You're right about limited power, though. That's to protect the motor. And, no flames...
