The top cap or finish piece is what's causing it. I removed mine and used some foam/tape backed weatherstripping. I used it to line to contact area then reinstalled it. Took the noise right away. Dealership wont fix these things, I had to correct several sources of noises in my 08.
Do a search for shifter change, there's a step by step to removing all the console pieces. Best of luck. I stopped driving the car it got so bad, pissed me off that a BRAND new car rattled and creeked so badly. I just turned 26000 miles

This works wonders on the delta platform's shoddy fit and finish.

That's the same stuff I used too. There's a sequence to taking it off. You take the coin tray out, then pull off the bezel around the switches. There's 2 bolts holding the piece in. Do a search, it's easier to see that way.

Check around here as there are many threads on how to remove parts of the dash with diagrams.
I used rubber sealant strip material and helicopter tape to stop my noises.
It just takes a little work but it can be done.
Most times it is the parts that are cliped on as they are snug but not as snug as a screwed on part. Plastic on plactic clipped will have noise and often changes witht he weather temps. A little something beteern will solve it most times.

I've been using double sided tape (like nacademus posted) on my headliner to keep the rattles away, and it works good! I did have a rattle coming from the lower dash near where you're talking, and it was a cover for the steering column of some sort was loose...
