This new one appears to be different from the original, but I can't say exactly why. I don't drive the HHR, I'm usually just the passenger and I don't spend a lot of time looking at the shift knob.
Hope that solves the key jamming problem anyway!
Weird. I had my shifter replaced yesterday as well, and my part number is 15926921.

Looking at my papers from Nov., it is the same part no.--15828149.
Maybe the part is evolving?

I just bought a 2006 LS, with 28,000 miles on it from the dealer in Joplin MO . My wife just woke me up telling me that the key will not come out of the ignition; also the steering wheel has never locked. I did not know it was supposed to lock.

I tried everything I could think of to get it to release. Then I came in and started to read this thread. I thought I was going crazy, I mean how can you not be able to get a key out?

I guess she will have to call the dealer in the morning.

I still really like the HHR.

Yea, I'm having the same problem with my key not coming out of the ignition. My sister and dad have been driving my car while I'm working out some court stuff, but one night my dad called me saying that the key wouldn't come out of the ignition. He finally got it out, but the next day it got stuck again and NO ONE TOLD ME! So for about a week they've been driving it like that, and finally the battery died and thats when I found out yesterday what was wrong. So pissed because any time last week they could have gotten it fixed at the dealership. So I gotta get that done today or tomorrow.

Finally got the Key out. My wife found out how.

Had to take off the access panel on the steering column and push the spring toward the drivers door, while turning and pulling the key out. It is a 2 handed operation, but the battery shouldn't go dead now.
