Well C-Meth it sounds like your ignition is failing, there seems to have been an issue with them from the first model year up through the '09s. Here's a link on the issue, you might try lubricating the cylinder but that's only a temporary fix, you're going to end up replacing it I'm afraid. You just have the opposite of the usual problem of the key sticking in the ignition so you can't shut the vehicle off.

Is your steering wheel locked as well? Just a guess, but I know my own (2007 HHR LS with manual transmission) ignition key will absolutely not budge until the steering wheel unlocks. I park on a hill facing downward, and I always turn my wheels into the curb as a precaution. If I turn the wheel to the right all the way when parking, and the I come back later to use the vehicle, my ignition key will not turn until I turn the wheel in the right direction slightly. I do not know why this happens - only that it happens for me.

I had mine lock in the run position the car would not turn off. So I put it in gear and took it to the dealor. It was a defective tumbler mechanism. Mine had been a rental and who knows what someone tried to start it with. It is a 2010 and only had 8040 miles on it when I test drove it. It was fixed under warenty.
