Interior fans only work on high and theres a burning smell

Hello, I have a 06' HHR.

The interior fans only work on highest setting. Also there is a burning smell when using the fans. What could it be? Thanks

Your fan resistor has gone bad.

Is this easy to replace? Is there a how-to?

This thread should help you out, also make sure you don't have water leaking in, its a known and common problem on the 2006 model year.

Thank you. So this part is fairly easy to locate and replace. Do you know how much this part is? And is it a dealer only part? Thanks again.

Learn how to do your own legwork. Start by googling "HHR fan resistor". Call your local dealer. Check with your local auto parts store.

You will get faster and better results that way.

Just a quick question as I am about to go purchase this part and install it myself when I get home.
Do I need to dis-connect the battery or any electrical components before I uninstall the old and install the new "heater motor resistor"? As to not fry anything or get electricuted, thanks.

If you think you could get electrocuted - I really don't feel comfortable suggesting you disconnect the battery in case you short the battery out with disasterous results. Nor do I feel comfortable saying just replace it, ensuring the vehicle is turned off (with the key out of the ignition).

I'd suggest you take it to a dealer and have them install it. A 5 minute job.

No worries... Just leave the key in the off position. It will power off that circuit
