Intermitten Power Steering issue

My 2007 HHR LT will periodically show power steering in the display & I have no power steering. I found that I can stop, turn off, & restart; power steering is ok. May not do it for a month. As far as I can find there is no recall for the steering for my year model but there is for the 2009 - 2010. So far all my research seems to point to steering motor under the dash but could be the steering module. From what I have read the dealer isn't much good at finding the problem, they may replace the motor, then replace the module, and finally replacing the steering column & i'm not wanting to spend a fortune for that kind of service. Anyone have any ideas?

No recall.....HOWEVER there is an extended warranty for the life of the car all years.

In other words, you have to ask for it. And hopefully you did save the letter from GM that was mailed to registered owners a few years ago.

Have the ignition recalls been done?

As Don states, you have to show the dealership that you have this problem.

Yeah, you should have gotten, and saved, that letter from GM... Also at the time you are at the dealer the power steering will need to be out or you may get the "can't replicate customer's concern" blowoff. (depends on the dealer I guess)

Thank you for the replies. I don't have a letter about an extended warranty, bought the car Dec 2014. I did get the ignition recall letter & got that fixed. So far the steering issue is intermittent & whenever you turn the ignition off, it resets & works fine. I'm going to try the motor replacement, check fuses & relays. If it gets to where it won't reset then I guess I'll try the dealership.
Thanks again.

Try the dealership first, explain the problem, the steering issue is fully known to be intermittent.

Drove ours over to the local dealer and he said "no problem'. I sat in the waiting area for about ten minutes and it was replaced...no charge. I had the letter though.
