Why is the CEL on? There are about 300 reasons it could be lit.

I read your first post as if you were professing some competence. Do you believe that any time the CEL lights up the ECM needs to be replaced?

Always hook the positive first then the negative.
Always disconnect the negative first then the positive.
And yeah, don't touch the two cables together. You can if you like sprakes.
Won't kill you but it does make you jump.

I have jump started hundreds of other vehicles with my HHR. I have used the under hood hookup places but prefer to use the actual battery connections in the trunk. I always let my vehicle run while jumping the other vehicle. Most of the time the other vehicle has a pretty well totally dead battery which is why it needs the jump in the first place.

I have been jump starting vehicles since before I had a license to drive. My dad was always a mechanic and I learned to do this small task when I was around 7 years old. I am 65 this last August and have not forgotten how to do this,...

Hundreds with your HHR? If your not in the Roadside business then you must know alot of people
with f&*^ed up batteries!I turned 63 in August and I think I'll stick with my procedure.Thanks anyway!

I prefer to heed my Owner Manual. Even though I'm 67.

I wonder what code there is for a ECU that still runs the engine? The only relation between jump starting and the ECM that I know of is clumsy people sometimes touch the ECM body with the red jumper lead causing a total short out.

I just looked it up: B101D is for ECM Hardware and B101E is for ECM Software (not actually related to the ECM, other modules not registered).

Well, I do live in the north west corner of Illinois. I have owned the HHR for around 8 years, It does get fairly cold in the winter around here and yes, there are a lot of folks that have crap for cars. I have not had a shop catering to cars since I moved down here in '78.

You may do as you please, just try to maintain some level of personal grooming and go for it.
