Exclamation Just bought a Chevy HHR.......Engine Light

Hello ALL!! I'm a new owner of a 2007 HHR burgundy. Love the car even though it's different. Purchased it with 117,000 miles, I've had it a few months and just got the CEL. Advanced Auto gave me the codes P0128, P1174, P1574, and P2544. They also told me what the codes ment. My car drives just the same but there is a whistling sound when I accelerate. Is this familiar to anyone out there. Checking here first.

Be careful with the advice from the auto parts stores - they may not give the right advice on what parts to replace. Always do a double check yourself on the codes downloaded to determine the appropriate parts needed.

The search tool at the top of the page here (just enter the error code) can often point you to a solution.

The whistling sound might be the flex connector on the exhaust down pipe - between the exhaust manifold and the first cat convertor. Have a look down at the back of the engine between the engine and firewall, and spot the accordion shaped section - that is the flex part of the pipe. Being careful not to burn your hand (start with a cold engine), you can likely feel for an air leak with the engine running.

A leaking flex pipe can also generate the P1174 code I suspect.

I thought 1174 had to do with fuel trim balance and was generally caused by malfunctioning fuel injector(s).

That was my first thought too, but I think with injector problems there is generally an accompanying P030x (misfire) code. But a leak in the flex pipe will throw the mixture readings off due to the O2 sensors not getting an accurate mixture reading due to the leak. Maybe??????

For that P0128 change out the thermostat, and please spend the money on the GM replacment, I can't count how many times , people , including myself bought the 1/2 the price aftermarket ones and after just a few months that code comes back because the T-stat won't open to regulate the temp within computer parameters

Update...

Hey everybody, I just wanted to give a update on my CEL that WAS on. I hit the highway for the first time since I purchased two months ago. Acceleration was good, I did 80 almost all the way there. The CEL was still on when I turned my car off. When I started it back up no CEL!! Go figure..... I'll take it. No whistling either. Remote start working and everything now.
