Remote start won't work if the hood sensor isn't closed, if the check engine light is on.
I was thinking maybe like other GM starters the solenoid has two lugs to connect to, one is a non electrical retainer lug the other is the lug the wire carries current to to tell the starter to start the engine . Try switching the wire , if this is your case!!

Nope only one spot on the starter and that wouldn't explain all the other symptoms. .. I did run a hot wire to the solenoid and did get the starter to work.... but again nothing from the steering column seems to be working but the wires and connections seem to be all ok...

Thanks but I think everyone here is missing the bigger picture it isn't just one thing if it was just the starter I could wire up a push button starter@$#/^ the fuel pump isn't working etc....
Anyone know a way to test the bcm? As I think everything that isn't working goes through the bcm?

Oh, I get the picture hence the schematic, the BCM and ECM control and trigger everything , a scan II tool will help pin point the issue!
Unfortunately your GM dealer or local auto electric shop will charge accordingly for the diagnosis.
The shorted out red wire fried the ECM and BCM most likely

That's what I've come up with after talking to him. The fuses and relays are not polarity sensitive and were isolated from the direct short. However, physically connecting the positive lead to ground sent +12v through all the chassis grounds. I'm guessing all modules are polarity sensitive and maybe the ECM/TCM would be okay if they weren't plugged in. But if the DIC still displays something and some gauges work your BCM still has some life. Maybe you shorted the column harness when you tried to turn the key..until then the harness was isolated possibly. I'd start by removing the wiring harnesses on the steering column and look for signs of damage there.

Interesting thread and I have to say this, why didn't that 60 amp fuse at the battery blow?
A direct short to ground! Were talking massive amps.
Sorry I know this is not relative but just an observation.
Good luck on this.

update
problem kinda found
when hooking up the wires to the fuse block i switched the battery wire and the electric power steering wire and that seemed to be the problem... kinda
now i think the bcm is messed up, when i turn the key to crank the motor some how the rear window wiper comes on!@#$$%# and my front wipers don't seem to work at all???
taking it to the dealer tomorrow to have the tech-2 computer hooked into my car to see wtf???
