I just use an alcohol pad to clean the maf when I clean the filter. It hasn't thrown a code though. I guess it depends on year and maybe even some sensors are more sensitive than others.
I cleaned the filter at 50k and 100k, don't know what they recommend. K&N puts to much oil on them. The whole air box bottom was full of oil the first time I cleaned it.

The cel is gone today...weird. I'm just going to roll with it for a few weeks and keep an eye on things. The car is running great...no problems there.

It's an as needed basis. I clean mine at about 50K mile intervals.

Recommended every 50k.....or as needed. Had one on my truck for 20 years..would spin it when the snorkel area got bug blasted...cant remember last time I cleaned it before I sold it..thinking 2005..but not many miles since then, still looked good.
I would fab/install a small heat shield on the eng side and allow the cooler fender air to supply it..cant hurt, looks trick

Okay so I think I've found the possible problem to my codes being thrown...

I took my car into the dealership back at the beginning of the month and had the MAF sensor replaced under warranty. Everything has been fine up until a few weeks ago when I got my first tank of 93 octane fuel after the new MAF sensor and it threw a cel maybe 50 miles into my fresh tank of gas. After a few days the cel went off. I got gas last week...again 93 octane and this time the cel came on after 10 miles into the tank. Went to Oriely's and had them pull the code and it was coming back that the fuel was to rich. I thought again that the MAF sensor may be causing this but he said it was fuel not air. I know we are supposed to run 91 in our cars and I know that many people run 93 so does this make sense?

The first time was at Shell...this past week was at the BP by my work. Both times was 93 and the cel came on shortly after fill up.
