Mine did the same thing last year. Dealer replaced it without a hassle. But my question is if it is such a common problem, why haven't they initiated a routine recall to fix the problem before it happens. I would be a bummer for someone to have this happen on vaction nowhere near a dealer.

Recall campaigns cost cubic dollars and are usually only initiated at the insistence of NHTSA, fixing them under warranty as they pop up is much cheaper in the long run.

Large corporations like GM don't think like "normal people"(trust me), I'm sure there is a report buried on some desk at GM outlining the costs associated with a recall vs. warranty repairs and recommending the cheaper route for profit maximization.

That doesn't factor in consumer confidence. That's why I woudn't buy another Chrysler product. Not because thier car was a POS, but the way they handled the situation.

That would be a good way to sum it up.....consumer confidence. I still have it my ride. Feces occurs. Would it be nice if they gave me heads up to bring it in before I had to take out a second mortgage on my house to drive my jeep back and forth on my 500 mile commute.....sure. Other than this issue I really like the car so I guess I am willing to meet them half way with a warranty fix. Kline they fixed it for me so I am happy, but, I feel for the guy that has 36001 on their ride. Josh

mine started as an intermittent problem, sometimes the key would come out, sometimes not. The times it would not come out I shifted to neutral then back to park and the key came out. After a few times it took more and more 'jiggling' of the gearshift to get the key out. Needless to say one day no amount of jiggling would work. Drove to the dealer and was told that there is an interlock switch in the shift mechanism and that the whole shift unit would have to be replaced, fortunately they did it under warranty.
