Keys Stuck in Ignition
#3
if im not mistaken, there is a small cap under the steering column. u'll have to remove that to access a button in the column. push it in and pull the key back and it should come out. worse case scenario, it may be a shifter issue. at the dealership i work at, we have had 2 hhr's and 3 cobalts do the same thing and we had to replace the shifter assembly. of course, these were all automatics.

Also use the search feature 2 positions left of the sign out button at the top.
Many issues with the stuck key. Seems to be shifter related problem which is cured when the dealer does a replacement of the unit. I'm guess you have an 06 maybe 07. Most likely the battery is dead on your other issue, not a fuse problem.
dronrie is right about the access area under the column, it is mentioned in the owners manual and if you don't have one click this thread https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/general-hhr-4/online-owners-manual-3074/

It's a common issue with our HHr and covered by warranty, it sucks when you need the car in the morning but once repaired it's ok. BTW to the forum

Are you sure you were in park or neutral when starting it. I had the key stuck issue but it still would start. Or was the steering wheel turned could be that the steering wheel is locked.

I had a similar problem. I had started out and remembered I had left the curling iron turned on. Only being 5 minutes from my house I turned around and headed back. I parked the car quickly, ran in the house, turned things off and ran back to the car.
When I put the key in it would not turn. I pulled it out and tried it over and over again. I called my husband. He was no help. I'd had the car all of 2 weeks and loved it but at them moment I was cursing a blue streak and now going to be late.
Fine, maybe it's the key so I ran back in the house for the other set of keys. Tried it again with no luck. Since nothing would come on, the OnStar didn't work either. I used my blackberry and called my salesman. He was tied up so they gave me someone else who didn't seem to know anything (barely spoke english) and well someone in the background was yelling at him and being quite rude. I was not impressed. I found the number for OnStar and called them. The guy was nice but nothing we tried worked. He put me through to "Roadside Service". I waited on hold for a frustrating 10 minutes. In the meantime somehow I was able to juggle the steering wheel about 1/8 inch, using my elbow I held that spot, still holding my cell phone with one hand I tried the key and "WHEW" the car started. I never did get to talk to the mechanic.
My sales guy called, appoligized for not being available and for his rude coworkers. He's been a good guy so I can't fault him.
Anyhow to make a long story short, the resolution. First make sure your steering wheel is in a "normal" position. This apparantly only happens when the wheel is locked in the most left or right position. If you forget, jiggle and hold the wheel in the new position, it should unlock and start.
Still lovin my HHR....

I had the same problem I couldn't get the key out. The problem was intermittent so I took the car back to the dealer they told me it was a shifter problem that they would have to replace the entire shifter. I left the car there and they had it repaired and washed by the time I got off work. The key works fine now no more troubles.
