Leaking oil at water pump access?

I have a leak from what appears to be the water pump access after doing timing chain and water pump. Do I need a gasket maker there? The original gasket was a little corroded at the outside edge but I saw no evidence of sealant and no o ring there unless I missed it. But no where did I read anything about a gasket or sealant added to the access cover before install.

yes that’s it. When I took it off there was a smal metallic piece I thought was a gasket. But it didn’t have an Pringle’s attached or any remnant of sealant on it. I did just get under there and noticed some oil on the bottom of the water pump. But can’t tell if it’s leaking at the seal or migrated from the cover. I’ll seal the obvious leak then clean that up and check it again.
if it’s leaking I’ll try retorqueing the bolts. If I have to take the pump out just to reseat the gasket ... I think I’ll cry. That pump was a pain.

thanks. 👍

Water pump has seals all around it , could just need a little twist of the bolts , that cover is on the opposite side of the water pump, but maybe the oil migrated there, or the oil is coming from the timing chain tensioner at the back of the head or the valve cover!

The ones I have seen are paper gasket. Take the pump out to reseal the gasket?????? The hole is there so the sprocket holding tool has a place to hang if you replace the pump without taking the chains off.

Didn’t see any leakage there but will clean all up and check again!

👍👍.

none of the local stores even show an access cover gasket so I’ll just use gasket maker.
I’m hoping I don’t have to take the water pump out to reseat the gasket. If it’s leaking there I can probably just retorque it. But it’s possible that gasket didn’t seat well when I put it on. It’s a pain getting that thing jimmied into its place.
I have the tool. But I did timing chain and water pump together so I didn’t need it.
going to deal with the obvious leak first and go from there.

The timing chain cover keeps oil from being sprayed all over the place. There is a nozzle in there, like a shower. I'm surprised that your kit didn't include a new one. The only way I've seen that gasket sold is in a full kit; it is just special paper.

I bought the cloyes kit with water pump and got my timing cover gasket local. There was no water pump access cover gasket with it. I may not have had to remove the access cover since I was doing water pump and chains. But I did and now it’s leaking.

The circled bit is the oil spigot. What I was getting at is that there is oil being sprayed under pressure behind the cover, therefore the need for the gasket and the no need to even consider the pump gaskets.
