Well as for this project as it now has become I will tear down the car and pull the head. To see what all went wrong I will take pictures. And thank you everyone for your input. Dose any one have a used engine for sell? Vin p. Regardless of what I find I think getting a use engine and rebuilding that would be my best option. What do you all think?

 

Depends on any damage you find in that dead cylinder

 

Ok so I finally got the time to tear into the engine. So far all I have done is pull the head off and this is what I found. The exhaust valve is missing a couple chunks. I found nothing in the cylinder that could of cause this . But had a lot of carbon build up. So I'm thinking it built up to the point of the valve hitting the build up and damaged the valve? Because the piston has no damage. The cylinder walls are not scared or grooved. Every thing looks pretty good except for that one valve. Anyone have an idea of how this could have happen?

 

Valve guide failure leading to the buildup to the point it cracked the valve? Quite possible I suppose. Being on the exhaust side you may have gotten lucky and the pieces went out thru the exhaust. You thinking of repairing that head or buying a remanufactured one?

 

Carbon build up is caused by the damaged valve. Incomplete combustion. Your catalytic converter is probably on it's last leg

 

I am buying a remanufactured head. And I thought the same thing on the cat so ordering one as well..

 

I would also recommend a complete timing chain set, balance shaft chain set and water pump. Thermostat replacement should be done also. Might as well replace the coolant hoses too.
At 140k miles, no sense in a new head with a bunch of old worn parts.

 

I had a smallblock chevy with an exhaust valve like that... It wasn't broken, it was burned from pre-ignition.

 

What I am doing now to the car is timing chain kit, balance shaft chain kit, water pump, thermostat, all hoses for the cooling system, vvts, cam sprockets, oil pump, frount crank seal, new exhaust from manifold to resonator, both o2 sensors, remanufactured head, new coils , motor and transmission mounts, and new spark plugs, drive belt , air filter.

Consider changing the tensioner for the serpentine belt.
