Oldblue, it's not unheard of for certain engines to take a "dislike" to Synthetic motor oils, what oil were you running. Mobil 1, Quaker State, Castrol, Amsoil, Pennzoil, etc?

I had one nice moderate mileage, leak free 305, turn into an oil consuming drivway staining monster when I tried Mobil 1 in it.

Once I switched back to Castrol 10W-30, it took a full oil change cycle to get it back to normal, theoretically every Ecotec that left the Tonowanda engine plant from '06-'11 was identical to every other Ecotec of the same RPO code.

Except for model year to model year changes, and the fact that the '06 Ecotecs used the original Gen-1 architecture, there shouldn't be wide variations between two engines that left the line one in front of the other. In the real world, one engine would be unquestionably dependable, and the other would drop a rod at 6,000 miles.

Maybe the OP used an engine flush before the oil change. That can wreak havoc.

Adding to your post, I have 07 GMC with a 4.8 that I started with Mobil 1 with the first 500 mile oil change. It has about 160K on it now. I have found that it doesn't like certain brands of synthetic oils. Oil consumption went up drastically with other brands. It seems to be happy with Mobil 1 extended, it may use 1 quart in 12k miles.
