since the ground is painted it may be the ground as well
take off the ground cable on the left side of the battery and the one on top and make sure you have good clean metal showing and it is good and tight

Update on Problem with HHR
Sorry for the long delay in getting this information out to those of you who may be having some of the same problems we experienced with out HHR.
What the dealer found when we were towed into the shop with the described problems is that the little plastic ears that hold one of the spark plug wires on the coil pack (located under the breather) was broken during assembly, or etc. and when it backed off it began to mis-fire, stall studder, and so forth. The quick fix was a wire tie, the better fix was a new wiring assmembly which a dealer in KY put on for us.
The car hasn't had any similar problems since.
One other word of warning though. The wife decided to purchase one of those little bottles of car fresnener that clips onto the vents. Within a couple of minutes, it dripped onto the dash and radio, and did around $700.00 worth of damage. Just dissolved the plastic. We've put in a claim to Dow (the manufacturer of the product), but haven't heard from them yet.
Do yourself a favor, and stay away from those things.

Great to hear you have your issue resolved. I would push hard with Chevrolets "CUSS"tomer service for reimbursement for a hotel. This was not a incidental mechanical failure, this was an issue with their assembly of the vehicle. Let them know that there are many other owners on the HHR forum that are anxious to hear the way chevrolet deals with they're customers. Also inform them that this is where some people choose to hang out to decide if they want to purchase an HHR or not and that I'm sure finding a good resolution might effect their decision.
