New Ignition Key RIP-OFFS
Don't get ripped off by dealers telling you it will cost around $100. for a new ignition key. After some research, I found that I could buy a blank "chipped" key (also known as a "circle A" key) on line for about $15.00. Took it to my local hardware store to have it cut. Then came the programing of the new key. It involves starting the car with the original key, shutting it off and restarting it with the new key within 10 seconds. After about a second or two delay (for the key to self program) the enging started. I just came from a dealer for routine raping, opps, I mean servicing (that's another story) and he quoted about $100.(incl tax) for a key. $30.00 for the key blank, then cutting, and about $50. for the programaing. RIP OFF !!!

Where I work we charge 30.00 for key and programming. There is no need to start the car.
1- Turn already programmed key to run position and wait for security lamp to extinguish
2- Turn new key to run position and wait for security lamp to extinguish
These instructions only work for HHR's destined for domestic sale. Most GM products intended for export require two working keys to add keys without a programmer (like Fords and Chryslers sold in the USA).

Programming fobs
I buy fobs on eBay. One of the two local dealers (in Shreveport / Bossier City, LA) programs them free, the other charges $30. Ironically, it's the dealer that otherwise gives really bad service that does the free programming!
