Well orienting the peeler is not a big deal, you do that while checking for a broken bead. Or, don't they do that anymore? I had more than one explode on me, glad I ALWAYS used the cone, another guy in the shop was not as vigilant he busted a couple of overhead lights.
By the 70's I really meant 1968-1976 (Coates 10-10, I think they're up to 50-50 now) bubble balance only. I still say it is a waste of money to ALWAYS replace valve stems, and you stand more of a chance of breaking the TPM while mucking around changing them. And, they are still there while you are peeling/unpeeling the bead so .......?

Yea, you may not ever get the concept, until you are tring to get the tire off without breaking it and then have to pay for it. I teach people how to do it, and still have broken one in the last year. ($80 opps)

In what way did the stem fail? I only see the absence of a stem. I was taught that powdery stuff is evidence of overheating due to long term underinflation.
I have only seen an actual stem failure caused by creeping wheel covers, or too long a stem vs a curb.

Both came in without a stem and were run flat. In the bottom one you can see the powdery stuff and where the inner part of the stem is still in the tire, the other would have looked the same if there was a tire...LOL. The powedery stuff is what happens when you run a tire flat (With no air)

2010 hhr lt, it was a rental car. One went out after I took the car in to firestone and had the alignment and balancing done for the first time. It was very suspicious and I have not replaced it yet because I can look and see that the tire is low or not.

Numer one problem TPMS have is the battery goes bad. I have had to replace one myself. It's very comon. I do not know of a way short of taking the tire off, that you can damage a TPMS. Was the tire removed to be repaired? Then, maybe. Otherwise no.
