newbie with poor MPG
Hi all! I have a 2007 HHR 2.2 no mods all stock with 2000 miles on it. My last 3 fillups my MPG is getting worse(by manual calculations and DIC) I am now averaging 18.1MPG in the city. I live in a town with a lot of stop and go. I drive conservatively(30-40mph in city). Use only Shell gasoline. Cant figure out the problem any advice??

The mileage on my 2.2 with automatic trans started out low but continued to get better through about 8,000 miles. I'm at 12,000 now and haven't seen much changes since then. I get 22-24 in the city depending on if I use the A/C and 28-29 on the highway.
But, from what I've read, gas mileage really varies on these cars. Are you having any other problems with it?

Average Speed vs Average MPG
When you fill up, reset the avg speed as well as the avg mpg. If your average speed is low due to lots of stop & go driving, expect your avg. mpg to be low too. Unless your avg speed is better than 40mph you are not going to see optimum mileage. My .02

I agree. I also don't think there is something wrong with your HHR or 18 MPG city is that bad. Most of my driving is city driving. Even though I'm known to do 80 on the highway my average speed lingers at around 30 MPH and I average about 22 combined city and highway. I probably average about 18 MPG city or so but I never pay attention to separate city and highway miles. I only pay attention to the combined average. I have seen my DIC display 14-16 MPG while sitting in traffic jams. I have owned three brand new cars now in my life and I have never got anywhere near what the manufacturer's MPG numbers are. On all three I averaged a few miles per gallon lower than what the manufacturer stated. I think the manufacturer's MPG numbers are BS to get you to buy the vehicle. The manufacturers know as well as many consumers that they are never going to drive their car consistently in the optimum conditions required to meet the MPG they rate the vehicle at.

I had to sit in a 45 minute traffic jam on the way home. For the hell of it I reset my DIC to see what kind of mileage the HHR gets in a bumper to bumper highway traffic jam. My HHR got a whopping 5.5 MPG. Who says city driving doesn't affect your mileage.
