That`s the second time I`ve seen a post where someone took a picture while driving WELL over the posted limit.
Of course if something should happen, like a ticket or accident, then they`re a victim.
You`re gonna have to write your gallons/miles, for about 1000mi. to get an accurate mpg.

 

Took the car in to get "checked out" this morning. They said car was "fine" and it was probably my driving habits. I told them I do NOT drive over the speed limit in town, truth is that i drive about 5-8 miles below the speed limit(unless its 30mph-then i stick to that) The dealer then "reflashed" the car. Averaging now 20-21mpg. I dont know if it did the trick but i will know at the end of the week when i need to refill. I am getting about 291-305 mile per full tank. Seems really low to me.

 

That is low...I'm at 320 right now at just a tiny bit below 1/2 a tank

That's not low for me. The fuel range averages around 300-350 miles per tank on my HHR. Usually in the lower 3s like 320 or so. There are so many variables that affect your gas mileage that you can't say what’s average or low. I don't believe most of the high gas mileage stories I read on here because they all seem to follow the same formula..........

"I recently went on a road trip in my new HHR. I can't believe the great gas mileage this thing gets. I was getting 48 MPG highway. My DIC was only displaying 26 MPG but I don't trust it so I did the math myself manually and it came out to be 48 MPG. I love my HHR."

 

I made my first intermediate trip last night to see the Orioles and Nationals play in Baltimore. About 80 miles each way. On the way out, I went through two severe thunderstorms, at one point hydroplaning until I backed off to 50 mph from 65. A few backups and 2 hours later, I was at the park. The DIC said I averaged 27.6/mpg. I thought that was good considering all of the wind, the rain and the slowdowns.

On the way home, it was smooth-sailing at 74mph and I showed right on 30.0/mpg. I'm happy with that!

BTW - my HHR passed the water-leak test. Not a drop and it was pourin !

Your right...I forgot to say "based on my driving experience and style" that is low. 95% of my miles is highway so I should be getting towards the higher end of the mpg chart. I will say that I'm right at 400 miles and at a 1/4 tank. I will fill up tonight when I go home to NH (try to avoid gas in MA unless necessary)

As with any car the needle seems to drop a lot quicker after 1/2 a tank! I'm expecting 460 miles before I fill tonight which is pretty good. I fill on Sunday and can drive until Thursday night before I need to fill again. I like that

If I venture above 75 I find my mpg to suffer a bit or on weekends running errands but for pure highway I'm impressed. Actually the DIC says 32.2 right now..have not reset it for 3 fillups. I use gasbuddy.com to keep track of my mpg avg anyways...I like keeping track of the mpg that way

I don't think I've heard of any mpg stories quite that high but I think getting 35 mpg out of a tank of gas is not unheard of. (I did it once) Next fill was around 28 but that included a lot of short trips on the weekend

The thing I kind of find funny is whenever we have one of these mileage comparison threads if people feel that someone's mileage is low it's automatically the persons driving style. True that does play a big part in the equation along with stop and go driving but everyone seems to forget things like humidity, elevation, barometric pressure, vehicle weight, AC use, fuel type, and synthetic or natural oil all have to be factored in. As far as the manufacturers MPG ratings.......

When the EPA tests cars and rates their gas mileage they don't actually drive on a road. They use a dynometer. They use the exact same pattern of driving that's been used for every tested vehicle for over 20 years. The "city" portion is nothing like what most of us consider city driving...there are many stretches of 1/2–2 miles at 21mph. And although there are many stops built in there is nothing like the stop and go driving of a real city. Thus, many people in 'real' cities don't see anything like the city mpg numbers.

The highway test portion is equally outdated with an average speed of 48mph. For those of us who use the interstate transit system in the US and know that posted limits of 70mph are, in reality, minimum speeds with most vehicles in the 75–80mph range this portion of the EPA test is equally unrealistic. To further exacerbate the issue of inaccuracy with 'real world driving' the EPA tests all the cars in a temperature and climate controlled building at 68–86 degrees fahrenheit with a vehicle that is already warmed up (highway only, city portion is cold start) and A/C turned off. It assumes a flat level road (ie no hills). It measures exhaust CO2 to determine how much fuel was used.

 

Thanks for the input everyone. I still think my MPG is low. I will say i live where it is insanely humid(avg is 85-95%) and hot (avg this time of year is about 98 degrees-in a month the average will be 105-108!!) so yes the A/C is blasting and works AWSOME, but still looking for that elusive 23-27mpg city driving. If there are any suggestions such as mods (K&N filter, Mobile 1 synthetic oil, etc) i should look at to help i would appreciate it.

 

I just returned from a trip to Texas and got about 410 miles per tank full.
My average was a low of 28.8 mpg and a High of 33.4 on the flats of Louisiana
east Texas. These averages where from Orlando to New Braunfels Tx only. I used 2 1/2 tanks out and put on 1185 miles. Total trip 3081 miles
I have not figured the average for the entire trip.
