Test for power at the brake lamp switch. If you have power there then the switch is bad.

sorry, seems the vehicle must be running for these lights to work. I was checking them in my garage, no motor running. while backing out i noticed they did work! thanks anyway.

I noticed the same thing after I did my tail light modification. 3rd brake light works but tails (all 4 now) don't work, ONLY when the ignition is OFF. Once you turn it on, all is well. Thought that was very strange, but since they work when the car is on, I'm not all that concerned about it. Figured it had something to do with my modification...guess not.

I though the same when I installed my LED's. Went to test after install, and nothing but the 3rd. Rechecked everything again, and the same. For some reason I decieded to start it up and walla....

Not sure what the reason for it is, but it's different.

Yep or key ON, also learned that one.. Yet every Chevy prior to the hhr, never needed the key on, or running to test brake lights..

Edit: & on my '08, the 3rd brake light does NOT light without key on or running also..

Go figure...

I just logged in specifically to ask if anyone has noticed that even though all brake lights work when the key is on, only the CHMSL works when the key is off. Did a quick search, and found this thread. I guess it's normal.

Seems so..

Only my CHMSL (3rd brake light) does need the key to be at least on ACC to activate when depressing the brake..

I guess mine is "special"...........LOL
